Apparent concern for modesty a subtle justification to go on the hunt?
Recently, Australian Muslim Shiek Hilaly was quoted as saying:
“Rape is 90% the woman’s responsibility. If you take uncovered meat and put it on the street, on the pavement, in a garden, in a park or in the backyard, without a cover and the cat eats it, then whose fault will it be? The cats or the uncovered meats? If the woman is in her house and she is in her veil and she shows modesty, disasters don’t happen.”
Robert Spencer’s video commentary Jihad Watch did a take on this and it is very helpful for understanding the Muslim mind. He shows that the comment of Hilaly does not arise out of a simple concern for modesty. Instead, he reveals that there is a way in which Muslim men understand the teaching of Mohammed to actually justify the rape of non-Muslim women. It is only a few short minutes long and well-worth your time.
Reflecting on this, I found that Hilaly’s quote takes on a sinister connotation. Could this actually be construed as a justification or even an encouragement for the “cats” to go on the hunt for non-Muslim meat? In light of all the madness that we are witnessing around the world, it would not surprise me a bit to see it used as such.
Of course, I would be amiss if I did not point out that the Bible does have something to say in this regard. 1 Timothy2:9 states: “(I desire then) that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness- with good works.”
Certainly, it is true that a woman’s attire does have an effect on how she is perceived by men and on how a man responds to her. But, while the Bible does instruct modesty on the woman’s part, it nowhere places blame for the impropriety of men on her. It certainly never communicates “well, she deserved it.”
