It may seem strange to leave a comment on my own blog, but I just want to thank God for men like Charles Bridges and how He uses them to encourage guys like me. I entered this quote knowing it was encouraging and hoping that it would encourage a brother who needed to hear it. Little did I know that it would be me. I re-read it today and it was exactly the reminder I needed. Praise be to God and His providential hand who knows what we need before we know it.

Time magazine asked Mons. Luigi Padovese, the Catholic Church's representative for the eastern half of Turkey, if the Turkish authorities had made any specific requests of the Pope as his trip to Turkey approached. Padovese said that the only demands had come from the press. "There is a request that the Pope apologizes for what he said, but I read into this request a kind of triumphalism — to see the Church and Christians and the Pope say out loud that they were wrong."

It seems to me that what the Pope refused to say verbally, he said through his body language and the Muslims are, indeed, triumphant.

I had an Egyptian friend while I was in seminary ('94-'97) who had been jailed for his Christian witness there. He spoke of the beatings he had to endure and he had the scars to prove it. One of the things he told me was that he was afraid that Americans did not understand the threat they faced. Remember, this is pre-9/11. He said that the philosophy of Islam was "When we are in the minority, we preach 'peace,' when we are in the majority we preach the sword." The constant use of the description "Religion of Peace" for Islam from the lips of our President and others has been a haunting reminder of my friends warning and history is proving him right.

Indeed, if the figurehead of Christianity fears to even make the sign of a cross in a museum (which was originally an orthodox church until the Turks conquered the area known as Turkey in the 1400's and converted it into a mosque), than what message does that send not only to Muslims, but Christians as well? I suppose the action (or rather, INaction) can be interpreted in many different ways, although this is not the first time the new Pope has made concessions to Islam. Many will remember a few months ago when the Pope actually rescinded a comment made about Islam's religion being based upon the precepts of violence and conquering. The comment was rebuffed when Muslims, taking offense to this comment, reacted, rather ironically, violently. At any rate, I agree that if the West continues to walk on eggshells around issues of different dogma concerning Islam, then we have already shown a fear and obeisance that Islam will most likely interpret (wrongly?) as fear and docility.

It reminds me of Paul's statement in 1 Corinthians 4:16: "I urge you, then, be imitators of me." When Paul wrote that it was in the context of his description of himself as a "fool for Christ" (vs. 10). He says: "we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless, when persecuted we endure; when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of hte world, the refuse of all things" (verses 11-13). This is what we are entreated to imitate. To live a life worthy of imitation was Paul's experience and should be our goal.

Wow. I am also struck by that last line. To say, "watch me" is a very faithful statement. Faithful in what the Lord will show others through her. She could have easily said nothing therefore turning down the heat for herself. Very cool!
